 Yin Yoga is a complementary yoga practice to the more dynamic and energising yoga styles today e.g. Vinyasa Yoga. In Yin Yoga, floor postures are held passively for up to several minutes in order to access a safe and positive ‘stress’ on the deep layers of connective tissue in the body. We can consider Vinyasa Yoga as Yang – hot like the sun and energising, Yin Yoga – cool like the moon and calming.
Physically, Yin Yoga restores and maintains the natural mobility of the joints, primarily between the navel and the knees. Energetically, Yin Yoga opens the body’s meridian system, which enhances the body’s energetic flow and supports emotional balance.
In Yin Yoga we don’t aim to warm the muscles but to work on the connective tissues around the joints of our body, safely stressing and regenerating these tissues to improve our flexibility, stability, mobility and strength. Through our meditative practice it also enhances our psychological health as well as our physical health.
And as this practice emphasizes stillness and silence, Yin Yoga prepares both the mind for deeper experiences in meditation and the physical and energetic body for other yoga practice, sport, athletics, running, gymnastics etc.
