Jo Harris
Jo Harris is an aromatherapist, massage therapist, baby yoga and massage instructor, kids yoga instructor and a HypnoBirthing instructor.
Always having been interested in all things natural, she became acquainted with essential oils while at university and this quickly developed into a passion. In 2006, she received her first professional qualifications in aromatherapy and became a member of IFPA (International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists). In that same year she received her first qualification in massage which was Indian Head Massage. Her love of professionally being able to help people’s bodies feel better, quickly led onto a great thirst for more education in massage therapy. In 2007, she spent time in Thailand studying traditional Thai massage and then time in Australia, studying deep tissue and remedial massage and baby massage. Also in 2009, with her pregnancy, Jo saw the great efficacy of the birth preparation program HypnoBirthing and became a HypnoBirthing instructor. The next natural step was to fulfil her passion in women’s health and this led into pre-natal, birth and postnatal massage training, Shiatsu style. In the meantime, Jo has been completing professional development courses in aromatherapy and pregnancy and birth and aromatherapy and children. She has also completed courses in baby yoga and children’s yoga. Recently, she attained reiki II level and enjoys seeing the benefits this gives.
Jo also devotes spare time to making natural skincare products and soap.

Integrated massage
Through many years of training and experience, Jo has accumulated many different types of techniques of massage. Integrated massage is a meeting of east and west. The massage is performed according to the clients’ individual body and conditions, but is an integration of deep tissue techniques, Thai yoga massage and aromatherapeutic massage. It may also include reiki if the client wishes. This massage is performed on a table. It lasts 60 minutes and the oil is made before the session according to the wishes and conditions of the client.

Indian head massage
Indian head massage is based on the ayurvedic system of healing. It is a 30 minute therapy performed sitting and clothed. This form of massage is useful for decreasing stress, re-energising and increasing concentration levels. It helps to alleviate headaches, eyestrain, mental tiredness, insomnia, sinusitis and anxiety muscular aches and pains in the upper back, neck and shoulders. Because it stimulates blood flow to the head and scalp, it also promotes hair growth. There are also the subtle benefits of chakra healing. Oils maybe used on the hair, if the client wishes.

Thai yoga massage
Thai yoga massage is based on the ayurvedic system of healing. It is a dynamic combination of massage with thumbs, palms, elbows and feet along the energy lines of the body, with the therapist guiding the client into yoga postures and some stretching. This type of massage opens up blockages in the energy lines which in turn increases circulation and energy and decreases muscular and myofascial aches and pains and helps maintain wellness. This type of massage does include deep tissue work but through the clothes and not with oil. It is performed on a mat with the client in comfortable clothes.

Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage is a massage that treats deeper levels of muscles and connective tissue. This type of massage is good for chronic pain. It is deeper than other types of massage and the pressure maybe sustained for a longer period of time. Before this type of massage the client will be asked to show areas of pain and maybe assessed for range of movement. This massage incorporates remedial techniques of massage, acupoints, trigger point therapy and some stretching. Trigger points are points which are painful to the touch, the area itself maybe painful without being touched when active and when compressed it may refer pain to other areas. This massage is performed on the table with aromatherapy oils to alleviate aches and pains.

Prenatal massage
Prenatal massage is a relaxing massage with safe essential oils designed to rid stress from the expectant mother and alleviate the symptoms which often appear during pregnancy as well as help the body maintain its optimum health during this period. Prenatal massage improves circulation, oedema, fatigue, muscular aches and pains, backaches, pain from varicose veins and carpal tunnel syndrome and other conditions seen in pregnancy. It includes shiatsu and therapeutic approaches, breathing techniques and visualization. It may also include reiki, if the client desires. Prenatal massage helps the mother to feel good about herself and the changes in her body and to maintain a healthy immune system.

Personal story
Jo, originally a teacher, started her passion with natural therapies in 2006 when she was looking for a more natural approach to life and career and decided to take professional training in aromatherapy and remedial massage. Many of her clients were pregnant and so she continued to study specialist aromatherapy and massage courses so as to work more effectively with pregnant women. With her pregnancy, she discovered HypnoBirthing and fell in love with the philosophy and decided to train as a HypnoBirthing instructor. She also trained as an infant massage instructor to be able to train other mums, dads and grandparents to confidently massage and bond beautifully with their babies. Jo specialises in prenatal massage as well as remedial and deep tissue massage.
