In this retreat we will explore the Essential aspect of contact in relationships. The interpersonal-field is what manifests when two or more individuals are together. It is unique and has the potential to evolve beyond the limiting domain of the personality.
With the aid of the Object-Relations model we will contrast the ego ways of relating and the Essential contact between two autonomous individuals.
We will see how the image of the other person, “object”, gets internalised and how subsequently we establish a virtual relationship with it, which overlays the actual relationship.
In the domain of the ego the relationship happens between two mental structures which attempt to maintain connection by avoiding difficulties. The ego seeks support from the other by accommodating and trying to be accommodated, so to keep the ego identity of both individuals and the relationship standing.
In the Essential domain contact happens between two autonomous individuals ready to take risks so to allow the relationship to evolve. The Pearl allows us to contact, feel, perceive and understand the other in a direct way so that we can challenge the limitations of the relationship.
In these four days we will experiment with the aid of Self-Inquiry the various difficulties which block our being authentic in relationships. We will work with themes such as the courage to be authentic and the sensibility needed to recognise the potential of the relationship. We will work with the limitations of the relationship so to be able to move beyond them without collapsing the interpersonal-field.
