Vehbi Koç Vakfı ve ANAMED tarafından organize edilen “Dördüncü Uluslararası Sevgi Gönül Bizans Araştırmaları Sempozyumu”, Koç Üniversitesi - Stavros Niarchos Vakfı, Geç Antik Çağ ve Bizans Araştırmaları Merkezi (GABAM) işbirliğiyle düzenleniyor. Sempozyum, 23-25 Haziran 2016 tarihleri arasında Beyoğlu İstiklal Caddesi’ndeki ANAMED binasında gerçekleştirilecek.
Bizans dönemine yönelik Türkiye'de ve yurtdışında yürütülen bilimsel araştırmaların yaygınlaşması ve toplumun Bizans kültür mirasına sahip çıkması için önemli çalışmalarda bulunan Koç ailesinin değerli üyesi Sevgi Gönül'ün anısına düzenlenen sempozyumda, üç gün boyunca yerli ve yabancı araştırmacıların en güncel çalışmaları sunulacak.
2007 yılından itibaren her üç yılda bir düzenlenen sempozyumda, bu yıl “Coğrafi ve Etnik İmgelemde Bizans Kimliği ve Öteki” teması işlenecek. Üç gün boyunca, 25 bildirinin sunulacağı dokuz oturumda, son dönemlerdeki akademik bulgular ve yazılı kaynakların yeni okumaları ışığında, Bizans dünyasında coğrafi ve etnik imgelemde Bizans kimliğini ele alan konular ve belgeler aktarılacak.
Bizans dönemi üzerine yapılan çalışmaların yaygınlaşmasını sağlamak ve genç Bizans araştırmacılarının yetişmesine destek olmak amacıyla düzenlenen sempozyuma, konuya ilgi duyan herkes katılabilecek

The Fourth International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium organized by the Vehbi Koç Foundation, Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED), and Koç University-Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies will take place between 23-25 June, 2016 at the ANAMED building on İstiklal Street, Beyoğlu, İstanbul. The symposium is held in memory of the late Sevgi Gönül, who helped further scientific research on the Byzantine period in Turkey and contributed greatly to society-wide awareness of Byzantine cultural heritage.
This year’s theme for the symposium, held every three years since 2007, is “Byzantine Identity and the Other in Geographical and Ethnic Imagination.” The symposium focuses on the written, artistic, and material evidence for the relationship between geography, ethnicity, and other factors contributing to the formation of the image of the “other,” and to discover how Byzantines talked about themselves when talking about others.
The 3-day-long symposium will host 9 sessions, in which a total of 25 papers will be presented, focusing on up-to-date findings and documents in the Byzantine world in light of recent scientific research. The symposium aims to improve awareness of Byzantine heritage through publications and to support a new generation of young Byzantine researchers. The entire symposium will be open to the public.
